Getting CPR certification is important because of one thing: it just might help you save someone else's life. So if not yourself, perhaps a few of your employees, or even one of your family members at home can be persuaded to get it. That will ensure preparedness just in case the unthinkable happens. But what do you need in order to get CPR certification? Let us identify each requirement.
First, you need a few documents. One is your valid identification, in the form of driver's license, passport or state identification. This is needed to register your identity and possibly verify it against an existing database. If you are in a classroom setup, it might also be helpful to present documents pertaining to any previous training you might have had.
Then you need to enroll yourself into a CPR training program. This can take place either in an actual classroom setup or online. With both programs, you will necessarily pay, but online courses tend to be cheaper, because they frequently utilize written and video instruction only. However, online courses are more flexible with time, and can be the solution for busy employees.
CPR courses, whether online or in a classroom, are typically divided into an adult (45 to 60 minute course) and a combination of adult and pediatric course (60 minutes). There is also a section called health care provider BLS (60 to 90 minutes), which includes further information about blood borne pathogens, as well as comprehensive BLS (60 to 90 minutes). Most of them will teach you how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator), and you can choose which particular course you want or need to take.
Once you are certified, the last thing you will need is recertification. This has to be done one year after the first certificate has been received. Recertification can take the form of either a retraining or simply a retaking of the exam. Retraining will happen if there are significant changes in CPR protocol in the interim.
